"Atha Yoganusasanam" Yoga Sutras 1.1
"NOW, in this present moment, begins the time to set forth on the path of union with the true Self."
The Devoted Practice Of Iyengar Yoga
Sadhanaa, in Sanskrit, refers to the devoted practice. This can mean a spiritual practice or the dedicated practice of any subject. The term Yoga does not only mean the practice of Asanas (physical postures). Yoga encompasses a lifestyle comprised of the Sage Patanjali's Ashtanga (8 limbs) Yoga (union of the soul to the Universe):
1. Yama- universal moral conduct
2. Niyama- personal moral conduct
3. Asana- physical postures
4. Pranayama- working withe breath
5. Pratyahara- withdrawal of the senses
6. Dharana- concentration
7. Dhyana- meditation
8. Samadhi- absorption of the soul to the Universe.
Through the sadhanaa of all of these aspects we will achieve better physical, mental, and emotional health. Yoga is a holistic practice that calls us back to tune into not just our physical bodies but our breath, our soul and our spirit.

Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar yoga is named after Yogacharya (yoga master) BKS Iyengar, who spent 80 years of life practicing tirelessly, utilising his body as a laboratory to study the asanas. Through his creation of the use of props, such as blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, he was able to assist people into the asanas when they may not have been able to take the classical version of the pose. BKS Iyengar was one of the first few yogis who introduced yoga to the western world. The Iyengar yoga method focuses on the gross and moves to the subtle, from aligning the physical layer of the body we can penetrate to the inner layers all the way to the soul. The strong focus on alignment is to prevent injury but also to bring an intelligent, transformation to the mind through the body. It then becomes a form of "meditation in action". The term "Iyengar" is trademarked and may only be used by Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers to describe the style of yoga taught because they are held to a rigorous set of standards.
About The Studio
Sadhanaa Yoga is an Iyengar yoga studio located in Rochester, NY. The studio was established in 2000 and was initially called the Iyengar Yoga School of Rochester. In 2009, it was handed down to another Iyengar teacher and called Nirvasana Yoga. Passing on the light of Iyengar yoga to the next generation, Amita Bhagat took it over in 2013 and named it Sadhanaa Yoga, which means the devoted practice. Sadhanaa Yoga is devoted to the practice of yoga through the asanas, using props to build a solid foundation towards exploring internal alignment.
